Incessant, irritating bleeping woke me. I groaned, my hands moving to my head in an effort to soothe the dull ache that had materialised. Alcohol, even just a few pints of lager, and early mornings do not mix. It took me a few seconds to realise that my phone was ringing, I cursed Carlie’s name on the screen. At seven a.m on my day off? Really.
“Hello,” I grumbled.
“Hi, Blake! I hope you don’t mind me calling this early but I tried yesterday and got no response, so…”
Lying through my teeth, I said, “No it’s fine. What’s up?”
“I’m staying at my Dad’s house for a while, until I get myself back on my feet and he’s away on business for the next few days. I just…I’m nervous being on my own right now with being in this chair and stuff…”
“Chair?” I interrupted.
“Yeah, I have a wheelchair. It’s only temporary. A few weeks and I can get my crutches.”
“I see,” I thought for a moment, then asked, “Is there anything I can do to help?”
“I’m so glad you asked. See, I know it must be strange for you, but I wondered if there was any chance you could help me out for a while,” I hesitated and she was quick to jump in. “Not for long. Just today. Maybe tomorrow. Just until I get used to the chair by myself.”
Noting the empty bed next to me, I sighed.
“I’m not sure, Carlie. Saying I’d help meant, I don’t know, explaining things you remember or something. Spending time together isn’t a great idea.”
“Oh,” she breathed and paused for a second. With forced brightness, she cried, “Of course! Obviously. It was stupid of me to ask. I just didn’t want to bother anyone else and have to explain why I have forgotten certain things. I understand, Blake. Thank you anyway…”
“Carlie, wait,” I broke in, already regretting the words I was about to say. “Give me half an hour or so, yeah? I can give you a hand for a few hours.”
“Thank you, see you soon.”
She hung up. I glared at the phone.
Because it was the phone’s fault I’d just done something monumentally stupid.
Uh huh. Of course.
Zach appeared in the doorway, his eyes also narrowed on my phone.
“Who was that?”
“Marc,” I lied. “He needs an extra person to shift some furniture with him. I said I’m free.”
“At seven in the morning?” His raised eyebrows demonstrated how much he didn’t believe me.
“Yep.”
He hummed but resumed getting ready for work.
I’m not saying that being deceitful was the right thing to do. In fact, I already knew the opposite. I just neglected to think further than the next few hours. And arguing with Zach before he went to work and I left to deal with my ex-wife, was not exactly high on my list of priorities.
Yes, putting it off for the moment, only meant I would have to deal with the aftermath later. Once I was home though, I could explain. Rather than talking about an unknown situation, with an unknown outcome.
